Debunking Hair Product Claims on the Internet
Our
lab would like to help you sort through all of the various marketing
tactics made over the Internet.
Things to Remember:
- Many products
which claim to be “natural” unfortunately
use plenty of chemicals. Noxious preservatives
or chemicals extracted from seemingly “natural” sources
are widely used. If there are words you don’t recognize
in the ingredients, assume it is a synthetic chemical and not “natural”. (Crown™ is

- Any product
which says “FDA APPROVED” is
Minoxidil. There have been no newly
approved pharmaceutical topical drugs for hair growth invented
since 1988. The FDA will not approve supplements or natural
products. Do not be fooled by the various marketing distractions:
anything “FDA Approved” means
you are paying for the same active ingredient. Minoxidil can
be bought generically, or in newer brands such as SCALPMED,
PROVILLUS or AVACOR, it was originally
introduced as “ROGAINE”.
- Herbs have not cured male patterns of baldness, or
made any difference even though they have
been used for thousands of years. If
there were natural (organic) herbs which “really
worked” or actually made a difference, we all
would have heard about them by now. If
there is not a new medical or scientific strategy, allow yourself
to be skeptical.
- Unfortunately,
manipulative companies will fake “Before & After” pictures. (All
Crown usage photographs are cited by the laboratory which took them.) Some
deceptive sites will use similarly shaped heads of 2 different people;
(check to see if the ears are exactly the same on both pictures). More
devious is using a person with thick hair, shaving it down and then
letting it grow back as an “after” picture (hair line
in the front will be the exact same) but the “new hair” will
appear “filled in”. It is best when the photos
are actual Polaroid’s, or derived from an independent laboratory
or study. If a picture seems at all odd or
fake to you, “photo-shopped” or “airbrushed”,
then assume it is.
- The best option
for thinning frontal lobes (temples) or hairline is
surgery. Do not be taken in by products which claim to
work on “all patterns” of male
baldness on all areas of the head. It can happen from
time to, but it is not the norm.
- Only use topical
products which have been Clinically Safety
Tested. A Repeat Insult Patch Test (RIPT) is the gold
standard. Otherwise long term potential side effects are not known. Many
rashes and irritation are possible, even with “natural” products.
- Use products generally which went through proper research, had a Clinical
Trial and reveal their results. Without scientifically
corroborated neutral evidence, marketing is meaningless. Ideally
the test would be “double blind” (the gold standard),
but that is not necessary.
